Canadian medics during the Battle of Vimy Ridge, Apr 1917
This month, we remember the hard-fought battle of the Canadian Corps at Vimy Ridge, launched on April 9, 1917 in northern France during the First World War. The Canadian victory was a remarkable feat and remembered as a turning point in the war, certainly a nationally defining moment for Canada.
In this month's Canadian Journal of Surgery, Dr Vivian McAlister examines the medical units that evacuated and treated 8,000 Canadian casualites over the 4 days of fighting. Rapid rescue and effective primary care - then and now - remain the priority for Canadian medical services.
