 Dr. Thain is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Geriatric Medicine, Department of Medicine at the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry, Western University. Dr. Thain’s main area of clinical expertise is osteoporosis and bone health with a special interest in hip fracture care. Her clinical expertise is recognized nationally and internationally and she serves on a number of advisory committees and councils.

At the local level, she is the Geriatric Lead for the Victoria Hospital Hip Fracture Unit. She provided clinical expertise in the development of the hip fracture pathway and facilitation of routine, proactive geriatric consultation in all older adults suffering a fragility hip fracture. She is collaborating in clinical practice development and research activities with multiple specialties, including orthopedics, anesthesia and emergency medicine, to continually improve care throughout the whole patient journey.

On a national level, Dr. Thain is a key contributor to initiatives with Osteoporosis Canada, including serving as a member of the Scientific Advisory Council, the Primary Care Knowledge Translation Committee and the Canadian Osteoporosis Patient Network (COPN). Dr. Thain is also Founder and Chair of the Osteoporosis and Bone Health Special Interest Group of the Canadian Geriatrics Society (CGS). In this leadership role, she is facilitating the development of a national community of practice among clinicians with an interest in bone health and orthogeriatric care which is instrumental in networking multidisciplinary stakeholders.

Internationally, Dr. Thain is an active leader in the Fragility Fracture Network (FFN), an international organization with a mission to improve the care of patients suffering from fragility fractures. To date, the FFN includes membership from countries across six global regions including North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia Pacific, Africa and the Middle East. She is a member of the Scientific Committee, the Vertebral Fracture Special Interest Group Advisory Council and the FFN 2021 Global Congress planning committee.

Dr. Thain is actively engaged in osteoporosis related research. She was recently successfully awarded a research grant of $240,000 over 2 years to investigate the effects of a nurse practitioner led fracture liaison service - orthogeriatric unit.

Dr. Thain is also passionate about medical education and mentoring trainees. In 2020, she completed a Master’s degree in Health Professions Education (MHPE). Dr. Thain has been involved at the national level in the development of competency based medical education (CBME) in Geriatric Medicine Residency. Dr. Thain is the Program Director of the Geriatric Medicine Residency Program at Western University and also the program CBME lead.
