In Memory of Dr. Ian McWhinney

It is with regret and sadness that the faculty and staff of the Centre of Studies in Family Medicine mourn the loss of a mentor and colleague, Dr. Ian McWhinney who passed away on September 28, 2012 at the age of 85. He has been long considered as the "Father of Family Medicine" in Canada.
Dr. McWhinney came to Western in 1968 as the first Chair of Family Medicine. In 1975 he founded the Graduate Studies Program in Family Medicine at Western. In 1986 he founded the Centre for Studies in Family Medicine. He published extensively on Family Medicine and his textbook on Family Medicine is in its third edition.
Dr. McWhinney has received many honours in recognition of his work including an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1998 and induction into the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame in 2006.
