Dr. Naveen Poonai completed his Doctor of Medicine at the University of Toronto and his paediatric residency and emergency medicine fellowship training at Western University. He also holds a Masters of Science in Health Research Methodology from McMaster University.
Dr. Poonai joined the Department of Paediatrics in the Division of Paediatric Emergency Medicine in 2009 and is cross-appointed to the Department of Medicine. He is a Scientist at the Child Health Research Institute and serves as the Research Director of the Division of Paediatric Emergency Medicine. He serves on the Health Sciences Research Ethics Board, the Children’s Health Research Collaborative Council, and the Children’s Health Research Institute Operations Committee.
On a national level, he is a Decision Editor for the Canadian Journal of Emergency Medicine, the Paediatric Section Lead for the Best Evidence in Emergency Medicine (BEEM), the Pain Assessment Toolkit Lead for the Canadian Association of Paediatric Health Centres, a member of the Pediatric Emergency Research Canada (PERC) Executive, and a Pain in Child Health (PICH) faculty member.
His research interests include procedural sedation and management of acute pain in children. Recognitions include the John Dreyer Research Excellence Award from the Division of Emergency Medicine in 2017, the Young Investigator Award from the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) in 2018, and the Terry Klassen Young Investigator Award from Paediatric Emergency Research Canada (PERC) in 2019.
