Biography: We study the neural mechanisms of reaching, grasping and object manipulation. Movement appears effortless but actually reflects a myriad of complex interactions between the mechanical properties of the body and a highly distributed neural circuit. We are trying to explain how various parts of the nervous system – from receptors in the skin and muscles to neurons in the brainstem and cerebral cortex – work together to resolve these complex interactions when generating skilled movement of the arm and hand. We expect that our work will yield better treatments for recovering hand and arm function following peripheral nerve injury, spinal cord injury, and stroke.
