Creating a stronger, healthier future
“I have been amazed by the spirit of giving by so many members of the Western University community,” Dr. Margaret Steele said, reflecting on her role as co-chair of the University’s United Way Campaign.
Dr. Steele’s work as a child and adolescent psychiatrist has provided first hand exposure to the needs of children, adolescents, adults and families living in poverty who experience mental health problems and undergo significant transitions and new beginnings. She’s also witnessed the tremendous benefit of the services funded by the United Way.
The personal stories of triumph over tragedy that she has heard and learned of throughout her career are what inspired her to get involved with the United Way, and take on the responsibility as co-chair of Western’s Campaign.
For Dr. Steele, who has lived in London for most of her life, the United Way is about creating a stronger and healthier community and future. “By giving to the United Way, you are making a difference in the lives of your neighbors,” she said.
As a professor in the Departments of Psychiatry, Family Medicine and Paediatrics, Dr. Steele believes she has a responsibility to contribute to improving the lives of individuals in the community who are experiencing difficulties. And she hopes that by modeling social responsibility, one of Schulich Medicine & Dentistry’s values, students, faculty and staff will also be inspired to enhance their involvement in the community through the Campaign.
Now in her second term as co-chair, Dr. Steele has been struck by the dedication and commitment of United Way team at Western who give countless hours to ensure the Campaign is a success and support can be provided to people in the community.
“I’m very proud to have been part of the Western United Way campaign team, as I have learned from everyone,” she said. “I believe we have contributed to making a difference in the lives of others in our community.”
