Alexandra Istl awarded The William B. Bean Student Research Award by the American Osler Society

Congratulations Alexandra C. Istl, Meds 2015, on being awarded The William B. Bean Student Research Award by the American Osler Society for her medical history research project on the surgical career of Dr.Edwin Seaborn, comparing his Great War experiences with those of William Osler and John McRae.

She has also been invited to present her research at the upcoming 2014 American Osler Society meeting to be held at Oxford, England. Her work is supported and guided by Dr. Vivian McAlister, Department of Surgery, Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University.

Dr. Edwin Seaborn Profile: Dr. Seaborn graduated from Western in 1895, practiced as a doctor in London, and began demonstrating anatomy at Western in 1897. He was the Chair of Anatomy from 1903 to 1911, then taught surgery. During the First World War, he was the Commanding Officer of the 10th Stationary Hospital in France and in England. Following the War, Seaborn returned to London, and many of his previous duties, including a private medical practice. Active in the London and Middlesex Historical Society, Seaborn collected many rare documents, diaries, letters and records from local residents, which he complied in his 1944 work, The March of Medicine in Western Ontario.
