• The Bridge 2020: Dentistry news and profiles
  Meet two of Dentistry’s newest faculty members – Drs. Cecilia Dong and Trevor Thang. Dr. Dong is a prosthodontist and the Dentistry Lead for Interprofessional Education. Dr. Thang is the School’s only oral and maxillofacial radiologist and serves as Chair of Oral Medicine & Radiology.

• Fake websites: Be aware of web scraping attempts
  We are aware of a recent web scraping incident at the School, resulting in the creation of a fake departmental website. Web scraping is a sophisticated technique that uses software to scan and copy website content and data with malicious intent. If you encounter suspicious websites, please report them immediately to privacy@schulich.uwo.ca.

• Discover Shakespeare at the Stratford Festival
  Health and medicine feature prominently in many of Shakespeare’s works. A special group for Schulich Medicine & Dentistry faculty, staff and students is being formed to attend his plays at the world-famous Stratford Festival, including lunch and an opportunity to meet the cast or production teams. • COVID-19 stories: The latest research, innovations and community outreach in response to the pandemic
  Schulich Medicine & Dentistry continues to lead on a global scale during the pandemic. Faculty and learners at the School are exploring new ways to test and treat the virus, gaining a better understanding of symptoms, designing and supplying PPE for frontline workers, supporting seniors and providing care to people in the community.

  Thomas Drysdale, PhD, has been appointed as the Associate Dean, Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University effective July 1, 2020 to June 30, 2025.

• Music sparks virtual connections with the community’s most vulnerable
  Second-year medical student David Zheng has organized more than 100 student volunteers to play live musical performances over video chat for residents in long term care homes and other health care facilities who may be feeling isolated as a result of the pandemic.

  Michelle Quaye, MD’20, says she’s learned a lot about herself and what it means to be a leader during her medical school experience.
  


• Research: Class of medication used for overactive bladder linked to onset of dementia
  A recent study from researchers at Schulich Medicine & Dentistry, Lawson Health Research Institute and ICES provides further evidence of a link between a common class of medications called anticholinergics and the onset of dementia.

• In memoriam: Dr. Douglas Bocking
  Dr. Douglas Bocking, MD’43, former Dean of Medicine, died on May 9 at the age of 99. He is remembered as a great scholar, mentor and champion for the School and University.
  


• In the news: COVID-19 research and community contributions
  Faculty members and learners made national and international headlines during the past month. David Edgell, PhD, shared details on CTV News Network about his team’s work to develop a serological antibody test for COVID-19. Janet Martin, PharmD, is part of a global collaborative that studied the impact of cancelled surgeries. Medical students involved in volunteer initiatives to aid in the pandemic were featured by University Affairs. And Dr. Charles Weijer shared his expertise on the ethics of human challenge studies.
  


• J. Allyn Taylor International Prize in Medicine Symposium
  Each year, Robarts Research Institute awards the distinguished J. Allyn Taylor International Prize in Medicine to an individual who has made outstanding research contributions. A premier event, the accompanying Symposium is held to showcase the tremendous research efforts of researchers at Robarts and around the world. This year, planning and preparation to host this event and adjudicate the award has become complicated due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, a decision has been made to cancel the 2020 Symposium and Prize.

• After brain injury: An optimist’s approach to treatment
  Neuroplasticity is the brain’s ability to rewire itself after injury. Through research, Arthur Brown, PhD, is harnessing this power in order to develop new ways to treat concussion. The final video in the four-part series, Brainstorm: Straight Talk on Concussion.
  


• Western creates new leadership role, advisory council to chart a path forward for anti-racism
  Western released the Anti-Racism Working Group report and the University’s response and actions. The University will create a new leadership role and an advisory council that will guide university-wide efforts to develop a sustained strategy for tackling racism on campus and in the world.
  


• Welcome to our new resident doctors
  More than 200 new resident doctors are beginning their training at Schulich Medicine & Dentistry in July. Drs. John Yoo, Lois Champion, Terri Paul and Karishma Desai provide a warm welcome to the newest members of our School community.

• Mental health is fundamental to health during the pandemic: A Q&A with Dr. Chandlee Dickey
  As one of 17 Psychiatry Chairs in Canada, Dr. Chandlee Dickey is calling for more support for vulnerable populations in the midst of the pandemic. The group is specifically concerned about people with serious mental illnesses or addictions, vulnerable populations in violent living situations and frontline health care providers.
  


• COVID-19: The latest research and innovations
  Faculty and learners at the School are developing innovative new technologies and devices to support health care providers, exploring important lessons from countries who have successfully managed COVID-19 and focusing on youth mental health during the pandemic.

• In the news: Research with global impact
  Faculty members at the School made international headlines for their expert opinions and important contributions to research. The Irish Sun reported on new research from Ravi Menon, PhD, showing repetitive mild impacts in contact sports cause changes in the brain. Dr. Javeed Sukhera shared insights on supporting the mental health of youth during the pandemic. Dr. Saverio Stranges explained what can be learned from other countries about fighting the pandemic in the community and Charles Weijer was featured in an article in The Washington Post on human challenge studies for COVID-19.
  


• Antioxidants in the brain linked to improved treatment for psychosis
  Patients who experience their first episode of psychosis will have better overall outcomes if they respond early to treatment. A research team led by Dr. Lena Palaniyappan studied antioxidant levels in the brain and found that these chemicals may improve outcomes of early intervention in psychosis.
  


• New institute pushes neuroscience research forward
  The Western Institute for Neuroscience will provide a framework that coordinates and unifies neuroscience expertise at Western, Lawson Health Research Institute, London Health Sciences Centre and other campus and community collaborators by creating an entity that provides academic leadership related to a shared vision, program alignment and advocacy.
  


• Western moves up in QS World University Rankings
  Western researchers were top in Canada for research output for the second year in a row, according to the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University 2021 rankings, released on June 10.
  


• New office elevates Indigenous presence across campus
  The Office of Indigenous Initiatives is the next step in the University’s commitment to stronger Indigenous considerations in all aspects of its operations. It sits within the Office of the Provost because of its strong links with the University’s teaching and research mission. In addition, it houses the Indigenous Student Centre, formerly Indigenous Services.
  


• Western partners with Bell on 5G research initiative
  Western has partnered with Bell Canada to create an advanced 5G research centre. Bell will invest $2.7 million and deploy 5G network equipment and infrastructure throughout the Western campus. The partnership will also fund research and development initiatives, training opportunities, and technological innovations.
  


• Media releases in January highlight outstanding research
  This month several media releases highlighted outstanding research taking place across the School. Read more about the increased risk of depression and suicide for women with complications after pelvic mesh implants, and how MRI techniques are showing unique signatures in concussion in rugby players.

  Gregor Reid, PhD, shares his reflections on his recent visit to the Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation Youth Centre, a safe haven that provides adolescent-friendly sexual and reproductive health services alongside educational and recreational activities for youth living in Masiphumelele and surrounding areas.

  The Oncology Research Internship) initiative in the Department of Oncology pairs resident mentors with medical students, providing an introduction to research and case reports.

• Media releases highlight research about common spine disease and the transformation of tobacco plants
  This month, a number of media releases highlighted outstanding research taking place across the School. Read about a major breakthrough into a better understanding of a highly prevalent spine disease that affects an astounding 25 to 30 per cent of North American men over 50 and tobacco plants transformed into ‘green bioreactors’ to benefit human health.
  


• Using artificial intelligence and brain stimulation to improve treatment for psychosis
  In collaboration with five European centres, Dr. Lena Palaniyappan will be collecting brain scans and genetic information from more than 60,000 patients in order to understand the relationship between genetics and brain development. He is doing so with $2.1 million in support from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the EU consortium.
  


• Commercialization strategies top competition
  Trainees took home top prizes at the Proteus Innovation Competition, a four-month-long contest that takes three newly developed technologies and challenges teams to plan their commercialization. Congratulations to Joshua Dierolf, Tim Han, Christopher Leclerc and Jeffrey Levine.

  Walking through a tight, crowded corridor of the hospital, Clayton Law watched as a father bag-mask ventilated his son and the tiny patient’s mother held on to the IV bags with one arm. In the distance, he saw another family wheeling their loved one off on a stretcher so he could pass away at home. Law was one of 13 undergraduate medical students who took advantage of an opportunity for an international elective. It was an eye-opening learning experience none will ever forget.

• Government of Canada supports HockeyFIT expansion across Canada
  The Public Health Agency of Canada will invest up to $2.5 million over three-and-a-half years to help expand the Hockey Fans in Training (Hockey FIT) program across the country. This program, which was founded by Dr. Rob Petrella, aims to motivate Canadian adult males to eat healthier foods and become more physically active by incorporating participants’ passion for hockey into the initiative.
  


• Senate approves changes to Internationally Trained Dentists Program
  On March 15, Western’s Senate approved changes to the School’s ITD Program from the current two-year format to a three-year format beginning in 2020/2021.
  


• Changes to upcoming student reading weeks
  Effective September 1st, 2019, Fall Reading Week will be scheduled to begin on the third Monday after Thanksgiving and end at midnight on the subsequent Sunday. As a result, the Senate has also approved a new Structure of the Academic year to encompass that each term is twelve weeks in length, comprising of at least 60 lecture days.

  A large population of Canadians hesitate when picking up the phone to call 911 in a medical emergency because they aren’t sure how they are going to pay the ambulance fee. Working as a volunteer first responder for St. John’s Ambulance, BMSc student Kevin Zhou witnessed this first hand here in London, and committed to doing something to help.

  This month, a media release was shared that highlighted research which found that most patients entering hospital intensive care units for non-brain-related injuries or ailments also suffer from some level of related cognitive dysfunction that currently goes undetected in most cases.

  On May 17, the Medicine Class of 2019 celebrated their convocation. Families, friends and colleagues enjoyed a morning together toasting the Class. During the ceremony Dr. George Kim was honoured with the Class of ’62 Award and Dr. Hersch Rosenberg received the Douglas Bocking Award.

  More than 98 per cent of Schulich Medicine students have matched to a postgraduate training program after the two iterations. As in past years, the largest number of Schulich Medicine students (45 per cent, or 78 students) matched to Family Medicine.   Media releases in May highlighted research led by Michael Poulter, PhD; the largest clinical trial of its kind led by Dr. Alan Getgood, which found that young athletes needing ACL reconstruction surgery after knee injury can improve outcomes through an additional procedure called lateral extra-articular tenodesis; and the annual Discovery Week program.

  200 psychiatry residents from Canada, the US and around the globe gathered in London to hear from world-renowned experts on every aspect of their practice from depression, to sleep disorders and ADHD. The week-long course featured a mix of situation-based practice and in-depth review.

  For Dr. Genevieve Eastabrook, the classic children's book The Little Prince holds a special place in her heart. The main character reminds her of her brother, Thomas, who lives with autism and served as the main source of inspiration for her recent publication about the book's connection to the disorder.
  


• Shelley McKellar, PhD, explores the drama and impact of the world's first heart transplant
  December 2017 marked the 50th anniversary of the first human heart transplant. In a recent publication, Shelley McKellar, PhD explored what this clinical first meant and what it can tell us about medical innovations across the ages.
  


• Annual Bootcamp an international affair
  The Anatomy and Radiology Contouring Bootcamp for Radiation Oncology Residents, led by Dr. David Palma, attracts radiation oncology residents from around the world. For three days, residents experience lectures, hands-on learning, share ideas and gain new perspectives on how to do things.

  Unwavering determination earned PhD Candidate Tamara Tavares first place at Western's Three Minute Thesis competition in 2017. Through her success, she has raised awareness of frontotemporal dementia at the University level and beyond.
  


• Rugby study shows metabolite changes in the brain
  Researchers at Robarts Research Institute have shown that a regular season of play can cause changes in the brain that are similar to changes caused by concussion, though less severe.

  Dr. Seth Climans grew up in Richmond Hill and Vaughan, but after graduating from high school he came to Western University and completed his Bachelor of Medical Sciences. • Hair samples provide window into stress experienced by refugees
  For the first time, researchers have been able to correlate a group’s self-reported feelings of stress and trauma with biological evidence of that stress. A study co-authored by Drs. Stan Van Uum and Michael Greff analyzed the concentration of cortisol – the so-called stress hormone – in the hair of refugees who had fled the Syrian war.
  


• Research uncovers new link between head trauma, CTE and ALS
  Dr. Michael Strong, and Alex Moszczynski, PhD have uncovered a unique neurobiological pathway triggered by head trauma which underlies both chronic traumatic encephalopathy and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (also called ALS or Lou Gehrig’s Disease).

• The Paralympics demonstrate the importance of Rehabilitation Medicine
  The Canadian Paralympic Team that recently sent a record number 55 athletes to compete in the Paralympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea. The delegation included 25 first-time Paralympians and 19 previous medal winners who collectively participated in all of the sports on offer: para alpine skiing, para ice hockey, para snowboard, para nordic (cross-country and biathalon) and para wheelchair curling.

  More than 100 faculty, staff and students submitted their names to participate in one of the School’s budget and operationally focused Working Groups.   With global excellence its defining goal, Western University is reducing tuition for international PhD students to the same level as domestic PhD students effective September 1, 2018. This new tuition equality strategy will enable Western’s world class faculty, which includes 66 Canada Research Chairs, to recruit not only the best Canadian students, but also the best international students.

• How the brain is folded provides researchers with accurate marker to predict psychosis
  By using images of the brain to look at how its outer surface is folded on itself, researchers can predict which high-risk patients will develop psychosis with more than 80 per cent accuracy. Before now, there has been no way to examine young people before they become ill to reliably identify who will develop acute psychosis and who will not.
  


• Dr. Frank Beier appointed Chair, Department of Physiology and Pharmacology
  Dr. Frank Beier has been appointed as Chair, Department of Physiology and Pharmacology, Schulich of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University, and effective April 1, 2018 to June 30, 2023. Dr. Beier earned his Diploma in Biology from the University of Erlangen in 1991, and went on to earn his PhD in Biology, Cell Biology/Genetics in 1995. He then completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Calgary from 1996 to 2001.
  


• Ruth Lanius re-appointed as the Harris-Woodman Endowed Chair
  Dr. Ruth Lanius has been re-appointed as the Harris-Woodman Endowed Chair in Psyche and Soma at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University from April 1, 2018 – March 31, 2023. Dr. Lanius graduated from the University of British Columbia with a combined MD/PhD in neuroscience in 1996, and continued training at Schulich Medicine & Dentistry, Western University where she specialized in psychiatry.

  Planning for the new facility has been underway since the fall of 2016, and it is expected that the new facility will open in 2021.   In Uganda, Adriana Cappelletti and Rachel Loebach witnessed firsthand the effects poverty, government corruption and labour disruptions can have on women and children.   Dr. Paul Polak, MD’58, DSc’08 and the 2018 Dean’s Distinguished Lecturer will dive into simple solution to complex problems impacting millions of individuals worldwide. Dr. Polak has worked with thousands of people in countries around the world including Bangladesh, India, Cambodia, Ethiopia, Myanmar, Nepal, Vietnam, Zambia and Zimbabwe to help design and produce low-cost, income–generating products that have already moved more than 20 million people out of poverty. In 2009, he was named one of the world’s 'Brave Thinkers' by The Atlantic Monthly, along with Barack Obama and Steve Jobs.
