Congratulations to Dr. Mark Awuku, associate professor, Department of Paediatrics. He received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the University of Windsor on June 17. He was also awarded the Danielle Grenier Member Recognition Award for 2016 from the Canadian Paediatric Society. Read the full story.

Dr. Davy Cheng, Distinguished University Professor and Chair/Chief of Department of Anesthesia & Perioperative Medicine at Schulich Medicine & Dentistry, was elected as Chair of the Board of Trustees (2016-2017), at the International Anesthesia Research Society annual meeting in May 2016.

Congratulations to Dr. Jeffrey Nisker. He has been awarded the Canadian Fertility and Andrology Society (CFAS) Award of Excellence. Dr. Nisker was recognized for his outstanding contribution to and leadership in the field of reproductive medicine and science. Read the full article.

Congratulations to Jane Rylett, PhD, on her appointment as one of 15 Chairs of the CIHR inaugural College of Reviewers. The newly appointed Chairs will oversee strategies aimed at attracting and retaining outstanding peer reviewers. Read the full article.

Jacqueline Dron, MSc Candidate, received the Best Oral Presentation Award at the Department of Medicine's Research Day in May. Jacqueline is supervised by Dr. Robert Hegele.

Julia Abitol, PhD Candidate, received a $1,500 scholarship to attend a workshop in Maine called, “The Mouse as an Instrument for Ear Research.” She was also awarded an Ontario Graduate Scholarship.

Sarah Chadwick, MSc Candidate, Anatomy and Cell Biology was awarded an Ontario Graduate Scholarship.

Jessica Esseltine, PhD, and John Kelly, PhD, Anatomy and Cell Biology, recently had their paper “Specific functional pathologies of Cx43 mutations associated with oculodentodigital dysplasia” published in Molecular Biology of the Cell.

Congratulations to Pinki Nandi, Anatomy and Cell Biology, who received an Elsevier travel award to participate in the International Federation of Placental Associations meeting.

Justine Renard, PhD, and Laura Rosen, PhD Candidate, Anatomy and Cell Biology, recently had their paper “Cannabidiol Counteracts Amphetamine-Induced Neuronal and Behavioral Sensitization of the Mesolimbic Dopamine Pathway through a Novel mTOR/p70S6 Kinase Signaling Pathway” published in The Journal of Neuroscience. Renard also had her paper “What Can Rats Tell Us about Adolescent Cannabis Exposure? Insights from Preclinical Research” published in Revue Canadienne de Psychiatrie.

Parima Saxena, MSc Candidate, Anatomy and Cell Biology, was awarded a Poster Prize at the Paul Harding Research Day in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology for her poster entitled "Interrogation of AMPK-related kinases in epithelial ovarian cancer spheroids".

Congratulations to JT Walker, PhD Candidate, Anatomy and Cell Biology, on having his paper “Periostin as a multifunctional modulator of the wound healing response” published in Cell and Tissue Research.

Congratulations to Nina Weishaupt, PhD, and Aaron Regis, PhD Candidate, Anatomy and Cell Biology, on having their paper “Subtle learning and memory impairment in an idiopathic rat model of Alzheimer's disease utilizing cholinergic depletions and β-amyloid” published in Brain Research.

Congratulations to Sarah Mattonen and Sarah Svenningsen, Medical Biophysics, who were both awarded a highly ranked NSERC and CIHR Postdoctoral Fellowship.

Heather McGregor, PhD Candidate, Neuroscience, recently had her paper “Functional Plasticity in Somatosensory Cortex Supports Motor Learning by Observing” published in Current Biology.

Congratulations to Lindsay Oliver, PhD Candidate, Neuroscience, whose paper entitled “Distinguishing the relationship between different aspects of empathic responding as a function of psychopathic, autistic, and anxious traits” was published in ScienceDirect.

Jordan Ward, MSc Candidate, Neuroscience, recently had two papers published. His study entitled “The effect of topical lidocaine on muscle artefacts in awake canine electroencephalogram recordings” was published in The Veterinary Journal. His study entitled “A comparison of novel, selective fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH), monoacyglycerol lipase (MAGL) or dual FAAH/MAGL inhibitors to suppress acute and anticipatory nausea in rat models” was published in Psychopharmacology.

Dr. Sohrab Ali, Surgery, has won the prestigious Kidney Foundation of Canada Biomedical Research Grant Competition 2016 in the amount of $150,000 for his drosophila project. The nominated principal applicant is Dr. Hon Sing Leong and principal applicant is Dr. Hassan Razvi. Sohrab is a co-applicant on this grant. The work will be done at the Leong Translational Prostate Cancer Research Lab at the Lawson Health Research Institute.
