Driving Innovation Through Collaboration – London Health Research Day 2013
Wednesday, March 27, 2013
Ian Lobb's research on transplantation and surgical innovation was one of the more than 350 presentations made at London Health Research Day on March 19. A platform presenter, Lobb had only 20 minutes to share the details of his work to an audience of his peers and faculty members as well as impress judges. Each of the participants, whether they were platform or poster presenters had the opportunity to interact with judges who were awarding points covering a variety of areas including clear rationale for studies, approach and method, analysis and results as well as presentations skills.
London Health Research Day, now an annual event, showcases the research efforts of the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry's trainees and provides a celebration of the world-class medical and health related research conducted at London's premier medical research institutions.
This year, the event was highlighted by the inaugural Lucille and Norton Wolf Health Research Lecture Series featuring Dr. Terry Kenakin, Professor, Department of Pharmacology, University of North Carolina (UNC) Medical School, Chapel Hill North Carolina. Taking place during lunch, the lecture series is presented to all participants and guests to enrich their own knowledge of a particular research area. The series is funded by the Bernard and Norton Wolf Foundation. This year, Mrs. Lucille Wolf, herself a Schulich Medicine & Dentistry alumnus (MSc, Epidemiology and Biostatistics) and her son-in-law, Dr. Fred Leitner, MD'71 were on hand to enjoy the lecture and meet with scientific leaders.
Following the afternoon poster and platform presentations, participants networked during the wine and cheese reception and event volunteers tabulated the scores from the more than 150 judges who reviewed the presentations.
Awards were presented to recipients during the dinner at the end of the day. Lobb did indeed impress judges and he received a first place award for his outstanding platform presentation focussed on protective effects of hydrogen sulphide in prolonging graft function and survival during allogenic renal transplantation. Travel vouchers were provided to all award recipients which can be used to support attendance to academic conferences in the upcoming year.
With such a successful event, plans are already underway for the 2014 London Health Research Day.
