Dr. Gavin Giovannoni

Gavin Giovannoni is an academic neurologist based in the Blizard Institute, Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, Queen Mary University of London. His current research is focused on the Epstein Barr virus as a possible cause of multiple sclerosis, MS-related neurodegeneration, biomarker discovery & validation, and MS clinical outcomes. Gavin is also an avid reader, blogger, runner, gardener, husband, father, dog-owner, cook and wine & food lover.

Dr. Gelareh Zadeh

Dr. Gelareh Zadeh, MD, PhD, FRCS(C), FAANS, is Dan Family Chair and Professor of Neurosurgery, University of Toronto. She is Head of the Department of Neurosurgery at Toronto Western Hospital and Co-Director for the Krembil Brain Institute at University Health Network. Dr. Zadeh is a Senior Scientist at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre where she runs a translational research program at MacFeeters-Hamilton Neuro-oncology Program and holds the Wilkins Family Brain Tumor Research Chair.

Dr. Zadeh has a dedicated neuro-oncology and skull base practice, which includes a number of multidisciplinary specialized programs including a skull base clinic, brain metastases, pituitary clinic, and neurofibromatosis clinics. In parallel, she has an active research laboratory focusing on integrated multi-platform molecular analysis of brain tumors, together with a focus on understanding molecular response to targeted therapies, such as anti-angiogenesis and metabolic inhibitors. She is also involved in a number of national and international organizations. As past President of Society of Neuro-Oncology (SNO), she still holds responsibilities. She is Chair, Women in Neurosurgery Committee, WFNS also the Co-Chair and founder of the International Consortium on Meningiomas (ICOM) and Editor-in-Chief of Neuro-Oncology Advances, open access journal of SNO and EANO.

Dr. Alan Gob

Alan Gob is the Clinical Lead and Education Lead at the Centre for Quality, Innovation and Safety (CQUINS) and an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Hematology at Western University. He undertook his undergraduate studies at the University of Toronto and completed his Medical Training at Western University. In 2013, he then went on to complete an MSc in Quality and Safety at the University of Toronto, and currently holds an Adjunct Professorial appointment in the Department of Graduate Studies Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation, University of Toronto.

As well as the science of Quality Improvement, Dr Gob’s interest also lies in providing education to others in QI and Patient Safety. He has developed a number of novel educational curricula designed for different participants and professions and is Director of the Quality and Safety Curriculum for the PGY4/5 trainees, with projects from this curriculum being presented locally and internationally. He was also the co-creator of an innovative model of co-learning between healthcare staff and business students, that is now in its 3^rd year of delivery. He has been involved in a number of leadership roles within Quality Improvement over the last few years; guiding the implementation of a new patient education tool with regards Patient Oriented Discharge Summaries, implementing Choosing Wisely Canada recommendations to reduce unnecessary bloods testing, readmission reduction for patients with Congestive Heart Failure, implementing the CHF evidence-based guidelines.

Dr Gob is an active advocate for promoting Quality Improvement both in and out of work and out of the formal educational environment, organizing journal clubs, the creator of a Quality and Safety YouTube channel and has a Quality and Safety website (www.theqigeek.com ). He is mentor to students and faculty alike and has presented QI work both nationally and internationally.

Dr. Chris Watling

Chris Watling is Professor in the Departments of Oncology, Clinical Neurological Sciences, and Family Medicine at the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry at Western University in London, Canada.  He is the Vice Dean (Acting), Education Scholarship and Strategy, the Director of Schulich’s Centre for Education Research and Innovation, and a Faculty Scholar at Western University.  A neurologist by clinical training, he holds a Masters in Medical Education from the University of Dundee and a PhD in Health Professions Education from Maastricht University. His research, widely published in the medical education literature, explores how and why feedback influences learning, and how medicine’s professional culture shapes its educational practices.  He is an avid teacher of academic writing, and is the co-author, with Lorelei Lingard, of a recent book on the subject - Story, Not Study: 30 Brief Lessons to Inspire Health Researchers as Writers (Springer 2021).

Dr. Charles Weijer

Charles Weijer is a Professor of Medicine, Epidemiology & Biostatistics, and Philosophy at Western University in London, Canada. He is a leading expert in the ethics of randomized controlled trials. From 2008 to 2013 Charles co-led a collaboration that produced the first international ethics guidelines for cluster randomized trials. His current work explores ethical issues in pragmatic randomized controlled trials that evaluate health interventions in real-world conditions to better inform patients, health providers and health systems managers. Charles led the writing team for the World Health Organization guidance on “Ethical Considerations for Health Policy and Systems Research,” published in 2019. In 2020, he served on the WHO Working Group for Guidance on Human Challenge Studies in COVID-19. He is currently a member of the Peruvian National Academy of Medicine Committee on Clinical Trials in Lower- and Middle-Income Countries. Charles held the Canada Research Chair in Bioethics from 2005 to 2019, and, in 2016, he was elected to the Royal Society of Canada.

Dr. Victor Yang

Victor Yang is a Professor in the Division of Neurosurgery in the Department of Clinical Neurological Sciences, Western University. He is also a Professor at the Institute of Medical Sciences, University of Toronto and at in Electrical, Computer, and Biomedical Engineering, Ryerson University. Dr. Yang's research focuses on the translation and implementation of emerging biophotonics-based technologies into the clinical and operating room setting, with specific focus on neurosurgery. He has acted as PI and co-investigator on numerous grants through CIHR, NSERC, CFI, and beyond, with a focus on spine, cranial, and vascular imaging and therapeutics. Presently, he has a team of 15 researchers with expertise in various engineering and clinical fields, with research foci on Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), Machine Vision Image Guidance (MViG), Radiotherapy and Photodynamic Therapy (RT and PDT), medical robotics and augmented reality (AR), stroke and aneurysm treatment and management, and beyond.
