Cecilia Dong (DMD, BSc, MSc, FRCD(c))

Research Interests / Specializations: My research interests arise from my passion for quality dental education and quality patient care. I developed new preclinical curriculum in removable partial denture (RPD) prosthodontics at Schulich Dentistry to help prepare students to provide quality dental care for their patients. Feedback is provided according to the RPD rubric I developed prior to joining Schulich Dentistry. I am currently exploring the application of mindfulness to develop student feedback literacy as a co-lead of an interdisciplinary research team. Patient care is optimized through interprofessional collaboration; therefore, I have developed and contributed to research on interprofessional education. I am also involved in research on biomarkers and patient-reported outcomes.

Research Interests / Specializations: My academic interests include the use of innovative technology to address education gaps via a knowledge translation framework such as www.MSKMEDICINE.com which is a free, online, educational resource which is used worldwide to educate learners about clinical assessment and management of musculoskeletal disorders. My current education projects include the use of evidence-based exercise videos to promote patient adherence to home exercise in patients with low back and hip pain and the SETPACE trial which explores the impact of the physical activity education provided to stroke survivors on levels of physical activity.

Tracy Moniz (PhD)

Research Interests / Specializations: I am interested in stories and storytellers and understanding how a sense of story enables people to make meaning of their own and others’ experiences. My research and teaching interests include health humanities, narrative, writing practice and pedagogy, health communication, and qualitative research methods. As a researcher, I explore the role of writing in advancing humanistic care in medical education and practice, focusing on (1) the uses and potential of reflective writing in medical education and (2) the lessons learned from narratives about illness and care experiences written from diverse perspectives. As an educator, I coach learners in developing their writing and communication skills in a variety of genres. I have expertise in narrative and reflective writing, and I facilitate workshops on narrative medicine and writing for reflection and resilience across the health professions.

Research Interests / Specializations: My research interests focus on the communication and guidance around decision-making in a clinical teaching environment. Consultant-trainee sharing of expertise, perceived power differentials, psychological safety, patient care ownership and autonomy are important factors and processes that shape how decision-making is experienced and learned in such a context. How can longitudinal patient guidance be learned, in oncology as well as in other specialties supporting patients with chronic illnesses? How can a competency-based medical education paradigm and a coaching relationship be integrated with trainees’ desire to develop their individually unique way of approaching clinical care? How can responsibility be shared in a teaching context? How can a safe space be created for a deliberate dialogue between trainees and consultants about physician values and motivations which are seen as playing into decision-making? …In short, how can trainees and consultants best learn from each other, for the sake of optimal patient care and guidance, despite obstacles to such learning inherent in the hierarchical trainee-consultant dynamic?

Research Interests / Specializations: My research interests centre around quality of care on the Clinical Teaching Units (CTU) and inpatient safety, especially iatrogenic causes of hospital-associated frailty. I co-lead the Centre for Quality, Innovation and Education Research (C-QuIER) Hub at LHSC and Western University where a multi-disciplinary team focuses on optimizing quality of care and education on the CTU.

Fiona Webster (PhD)

Research Interests / Specializations: Fiona Webster is a critical sociologist and Professor in the Labatt Family School of Nursing at Western University and holds a cross appointment with the Institute of Health Policy Management and Evaluation, University of Toronto, where she is also an Academic Fellow with the Centre for Critical Qualitative Health Research (CQ). She has successfully led many Tri-Council funded, interdisciplinary research teams with a particular focus on applying sociological approaches to understanding and improving care, with a particular focus on chronic pain and marginalization. By turning a sociological eye to the challenges of providing chronic pain care within parameters currently delineated by the Canadian health care system, her aim is to identify structural and ideological components of contemporary health care that might be amenable to change.

Elizabeth Anne Kinsella (PhD)

Research Interests / Specializations: I am an interdisciplinary scholar in health professions education with expertise in philosophies of reflection and professional knowledge. I use theories and methods from the social sciences to contribute to reflective approaches to health professions education, practice, research, and policy. My scholarship aims to strengthen the capacity of health professionals to use reflective practices to develop professional knowledge; to navigate the technical, practical, relational, and ethical dimensions of health care practice; and to become agents of transformative social change.
