Course Selection for Year 2 (en route to BMSc)

Course selection in Medical Sciences 2 is determined by the module in which the student wants to register in Year 3 BMSc. Students must complete ALL of the 2000-level courses listed in the Admission Requirements for the module(s) to which they apply for Year 3 BMSc by the end of the Fall/Winter of Medical Sciences 2 as one of the conditions for assured admission to Year 3 BMSc.

NOTES:

• 2000-level courses listed in the Admission Requirements may be taken in the summer between Medical Sciences 1 and Medical Sciences 2
• Biology 2244A/B and Statistical Sciences 2244A/B are the same courses - see Statistics Requirement for details

The number of option courses to be taken in Medical Sciences 2 depends on how many courses must be taken to satisfy the Admission Requirements for the intended module in Year 3 BMSc. For example, a student can take 2.0 option courses in Medical Sciences 2 if he/she applies for a module in Year 3 BMSc that lists 3.0 2000-level courses in the Admission Requirements.

To determine which courses to take in Medical Sciences 2:

• review the modules that are offered in the BMSc Program,
• check the Admission Requirements for the module(s) of interest (click on PROGRAMS OFFERED and then on the module of interest or click on DEPARTMENTS and click on a department and then MODULES/PROGRAMS), and
• meet the requirements for Admission to the BMSc Program

Students are advised to satisfy the Admission Requirements for more than one module for Year 3 BMSc since admission to Honours Specialization modules is limited and may be competitive.

The Charts of Admission Requirements (below) display the Admission Requirements for all of the Honours Specialization and Double Major modules at a glance.

Admission to Year 3 BMSc:

Students in Medical Sciences 2 must satisfy certain conditions to be eligible for admission to Year 3 BMSc, including the completion of ALL courses listed in the Admission Requirements for the module(s) to which they apply for Year 3 BMSc by the end of the Fall/Winter of Medical Sciences 2. Full details about the requirements for (i) assured admission to Year 3 BMSc and (ii) admission from the competitive pool are outlined in the Academic Calendar.

NOTE: 2000-level courses listed in the Admission Requirements may be taken in the summer between Medical Sciences 1 and Medical Sciences 2. Regardless of whether these courses are taken during the summer between Medical Sciences 1 and 2 or during the Fall/Winter of Medical Sciences 2, the marks in these courses are used in determining eligibility for Year 3 BMSc and the modules within the BMSc Program.

Admission to Honours Specialization modules in Year 3 BMSc:

Each Honours Specialization module has a maximum capacity in both Years 3 and 4, and satisfying the requirements for admission to Year 3 BMSc does not guarantee admission to a particular Honours Specialization module. The average obtained on the 2000-level courses listed in the Admission Requirements of the module to which a student applies is used to determine that student's eligibility for that module.

Special permission is not granted for students to register in Honours Specialization modules in Year 3 without having completed ALL courses listed in the Admission Requirements for the module prior to Year 3.

Students in Medical Sciences 2 who satisfy the requirements for assured admission to Year 3 BMSc are assessed for admission to Honours Specialization modules before students admitted to Year 3 BMSc from the competitive pool. See Modules Offered in the BMSc Program for full details.

Admission to Double Major modules in Year 3 BMSc:

Double Major modules do not have a maximum capacity and enrollment is not limited to a specific number of students. Provided a student is admitted to Year 3 BMSc and has completed all of the Admission Requirements for both Major modules (see Charts of Admission Requirements, below, for Double Majors), that student is admitted to Double Majors requested.

The chart of Minimum Averages Required for Admission to Honours Specialization Modules provides information about the maximum capacity for each Honours Specialization module and the minimum averages that students have required for admission to these modules for the past few years.

The average that is used to determine admission to an Honours Specialization modules is the average achieved on the 2000-level courses listed in the Admission Requirements for the Honours Specialization module to which the student applies. If the Admission Requirements for the Honours Specialization module lists 3.5 or more 2000-level courses, then the average is calculated on the best 3.0 of these 2000-level courses.

Examples:

The Honours Specialization in IMS lists six half courses (= 3.0 courses) in the Admission Requirements and the average used to determine both eligibility for Year 3 BMSc and this particular module is the average achieved on these six half courses (3.0 courses).

The Honours Specialization in Biochemistry of Infection and Immunity lists eight half courses (= 4.0 courses) in the Admission Requirements and the average used to determine both eligibility for Year 3 BMSc and this particular module is the average achieved on the best six of these half courses (3.0 courses) - the two lowest marks in the group of eight half courses are not used in the calculation of the average.

NOTE: marks achieved in the 2000-level courses listed in the Admission Requirements are used in the same manner regardless of whether these courses are taken during the Fall/Winter of Medical Sciences 2 or in the summer between Medical Sciences 1 and Medical Sciences 2.

Course selection in Year 2 BSc for students interested in applying to Year 3 BMSc is determined by the module in which the student wants to register in Year 3 BMSc. Students in Medical Sciences 2 who satisfy the requirements for assured admission to Year 3 BMSc are assessed for admission to Honours Specialization modules before students from the competitive pool, i.e. before students in Year 2 BSc. See Modules Offered in the BMSc Program for full details.

Some Honours Specialization modules reach their maximum capacity before any students from the competitive pool are considered. Students do not have to be registered in a particular Honours Specialization module in Year 3 BMSc to be considered for admission to that module for Year 4. Students in Double Majors in Year 3 BMSc can apply for admission to Honors Specialization modules in Year 4, provided they have completed the courses specified in the Weighted Average Chart and have a competive weighted average.
