Trace element analyses of clinical biological specimens
Our research focuses on improvement of pre-analytical procedures to eliminate and/or minimize the possibilities of contamination in trace elements analysis. We use trace element analysis for assessment of essential elements for nutritional needs and for detection of toxic levels of elements acquired through occupational or environmental exposure. Our trace elements laboratory uses High Resolution, Inductively-Coupled Plasma/Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) to determine over 40 elements in biological specimens, including whole blood, red blood cells, plasma, serum, urine, hair, and tissues.
Clinical evaluation of biomarkers and assays for assessing kidney function
A second aspect of our research involves development of new laboratory assays and evaluation of biomarkers to assess kidney performance. We have evaluated a role for cystatin C as a new biomarker for glomerular filtration rate. This parameter is a measure of the flow rate of filtered fluid through the kidney and is an excellent indicator of kidney health. Using a novel protein electrophoresis assay, we have also investigated the mechanisms underlying the proteinuria caused by drinking large quantities of water. Proteinuria represents an excess of serum proteins in the urine and is indicative of kidney damage.
