Retirement Announcement: Dr. David Cechetto

Dear ACB Colleagues:

It is with mixed emotions that I am writing to formally announce that Dr. David Cechetto is retiring as of July 1, 2019.

As you know, David has made significant contributions to research, education and service throughout his academic career. His strong research program focused on the role of inflammation in cerebral ischemia and vascular cognitive impairment and dementia. David developed animal models for the investigation of the combined effects of Alzheimer Disease and cerebral ischemia and other risk factors for vascular cognitive impairment such as diabetes, hypertension and atherosclerosis. He also developed an agent with potential for the treatment of schizophrenia, and examined the role of mental stress on cardiovascular reactivity.

Since 2000, David has been working tirelessly in collaboration with Rwandan health-care organizations as they rebuild the country’s war-ravaged healthcare system after the Rwandan genocide of 1994. Over the years, he has been the director of several important development projects such as Rebuilding Health in Rwanda, Assessment of Health Care Quality in Rwanda, Maternal, Newborn and Child Health in Rwanda and Training, Support and Access Model for MNCH in Rwanda and Burundi. David’s significant and collective accomplishments in both his neuroscience and Rwandan development work were recently recognized by the Order of Ontario in 2018.

On behalf of the Department of Anatomy & Cell Biology, I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude to David for all of his contributions, and to congratulate him on an impressive academic career. Warm wishes for a fulfilling retirement and wherever life takes you next!

We will have a formal celebration of David’s accomplishments and retirement in late summer/early fall (details to follow). In the meantime, we look forward to seeing David around the Department as a Professor Emeritus while he completes his work on various Rwanda projects.

Best regards,

Alison
